FFXIII: Vanille Sketch Reedit

Description

I love to see my artwork beautiful and when they don't, I have this strong urge to touch up until it satisfy me.

Even though not all I have this urge, but this Vanille artwork truly has the potential to be fully touched up.

This original artwork was fully sketch with pencils before I enter the entirely digital artwork using Adobe Photoshop. Ok, I know this is fully against the law of those drawing with pencils entirely... but this is my artwork, and I have my every right to alter regardless the method used (well, at least it's far better than those people who claim other person's work as theirs)

For this touch up, instead of using pencil again (which I feared will damage the artwork... well, there's no undo in real time pencil sketch ^^;), so I use Photoshop to edit! LOL. Wicked huh?

Here are the step-by-step methods on how I did it:

1. My original intention was to use Clone Stamp Tool by cloning the Sketch texture and then slowly edit on the parts that need it. But later attempt, it makes my artwork look as if I paint on it (too smooth texture, without any noise... so it doesn't look like a sketch at all) But that will later concern.

2. I start adjusting the shading by darken the cheek area... in the Original sketch, I tend to make more lighted part than dark hence the face looked flat and doesn't seemed 3D. Certain parts with border in between dark and light like nose and lips areas are too obvious, so I had to make it less obvious by adding more gradient into it. In other words, gradient is very important in realism art.

3. In the original artwork, the eyebrows doesn't look balance. So in duration of time, I balance them and make them more curvy and archer (yeah, put on some sexy eyebrows).

4. Second after the importance of gradient is the balance of tone. For this, I have to look on overall picture. Example, when you only adjusting the toner of the face... the hair (which unadjusted) will become pale and dry and that, you will have to darken them as well. Same goes to the rest, like neck and accessories around.

5. Her left eye doesn't look symmetrical with the right. So with the power of Photoshop, I use it to adjust using Free Transform Tools (Aha, save the hassle to erase and redo like the pencil sketch =P)

6-7. The process of adjusting toner goes on. Notice that in Step 7 I have darken the cheek especially the chin area compare to 6? You can see with difference of 3D if you apply the shading well.

8. Ah, the wickedness begins here when I manage to find a solution to make look like sketch by using Add Noise function. And there, I used Soft Light to blend into my edited artwork. =P

9-12. It may seemed like there's no difference. But I'm kinda particular on minor details especially when come to
the balance of toner or uneven gradient. For this part, it's all depends on your eyes observation. It's actually not that difficult. Just keep on zooming in and zooming out, then touch up areas which you think it doesn't look right until you are absolutely satisfied. It's like looking yourself into mirror, and if any pimple or dirt at your face, surely you want them to be removed. LOL. And Step 12 is still not the end, but the rest is just minor touch up... so it's no point for me to continue since there's no obvious difference for you to see. hehe.

And so, ends the steps of wickedness. But I wouldn't say it's entirely cheating... to me, this is the hybrid technique in between traditional art and digital art. Anyway, I'm not sure about you all but in my opinion, it doesn't really matter what is my method... so long the end-result is satisfying, I did put efforts in it, all done from the scratch and my fans out there can "Yay" at my artwork, then that's it. :D

Anyway, enjoy the end result here: [link]
